- Auction from the initiative helps fund patient care at Zuckerberg SF General Hospital
The popular Hearts in SF project marks its 20th anniversary with a towering spectacle made of 88,748 LEGO bricks. This iconic heart is now on display at the Ferry Building, ready to steal the hearts of San Francisco’s residents and visitors alike.
The initiative, organized by the SF General Hospital Foundation, traditionally unveils these six-foot-wide, 400-pound heart installations at varied public locations around Valentine’s Day. This year, to give the city an early dose of love, the hearts have been introduced ahead of schedule.
Created by LEGO artist Nathan Sawaya, one of the highlights this year is a heart entirely made of LEGO bricks. The artist’s creation, aptly named Inside, stands as a symbol of the vast talent drawn by the program. Proceeds from these heart installations help support patient care at Zuckerberg SF General Hospital.
Apart from the life-sized hearts, you can also feast your eyes on smaller, equally captivating Table Top Hearts and Mini Hearts. These smaller pieces come with a more affordable price tag, making it possible for everyone to own a piece of this extraordinary art initiative. The starting bid for these hearts begins at $40,000. In 2020, one of the heart installations even fetched $3 million.
The donations gathered from this project aid various aspects of patient care at the Zuckerberg SF General Hospital, contributing to innovative programming and backing the doctors and nurses with necessary resources to maintain the institution’s world-class status.
The Hearts in SF exhibits will remain on display at the Ferry Building till February 29. All hearts will be temporarily removed between February 5-9 for the upcoming Hearts in SF Gala at The Conservatory at One Sansome. To view the full 2024 showcase, visit the Hearts in SF online gallery.
