Young Hero’s Quest: Triangle Area Middle Schooler Collects LEGOs for Hospitalized Kids

A Triangle Middle Schooler’s Mission to Brighten Hospitalized Kids’ Days with LEGOs

Key Takeaway: Young Mason Fannin, a former leukemia patient, is on a heartwarming mission to collect LEGO sets for children at UNC Children’s Hospital to help them cope with their hospital stays, just as he did five years ago.

A story of resilience and generosity unfolds in Clayton, North Carolina, where Mason Fannin, a local middle school student, spearheads an inspiring LEGO donation drive for young patients battling illnesses at UNC Children’s Hospital.

Mason knows firsthand the challenges faced by children in hospitals. Diagnosed with leukemia shortly before his seventh birthday, Mason was showered with support from loved ones and even strangers who sent cards and gifts, assisting his family through his treatment journey. “One day at a time, that’s really all that you can do,” his mother, Ashley Fannin, shares the family’s approach during those tumultuous times.

Today, Mason, nearing 12 years of age, is a thriving young boy who enjoys soccer, fishing, and especially football. His family is grateful for each day out of the hospital and considers it a gift. Nevertheless, Mason has not forgotten his hospital experience, remembering being “hooked up to a lot of things” and finding solace in constructing LEGO sets.

In honor of the difficult time he endured, each year around his diagnosis anniversary, he collects LEGO sets to give to other kids facing similar challenges. “We decided to do this as a way to give back to other kids, something that could fill their time like Legos did for Mason,” his mother explains.

With a successful track record of gathering hundreds of LEGO sets in previous years, Mason and his family are eager to surpass their past efforts. “I like the feeling of giving other people stuff that I did,” Mason says, capturing the true spirit of giving. The family acknowledges that they were immensely blessed by others’ generosity and believe their LEGO drive is a small yet significant way to give back.

The young philanthropist is collecting LEGO sets suitable for all ages. The donation to the hospital will be made near February 6th, the anniversary of Mason’s diagnosis. To support Mason’s cause, you can donate a LEGO set through his Amazon wish list.
